Walter Sweeney
Born 1949. Educated at Lawrence Sheriff School and Cambridge and Hull Universities. A former Conservative MP, he is now a solicitor in Beverley. He sits on the council of the libertarian Freedom Association.
Bedfordshire county councillor 1981-1989. Contested Manchester Stretford at the 1983 general election.
He entered the Commons in 1992 after being elected the Conservative MP for the Vale of Glamorgan by just 19 votes. He was defeated by his same Labour opponent five years later.
The main themes of his campaign were:
Give us a referendum on membership of the European Union.
Say yes to CCTV in our towns and cities.
No to the Lisbon Treaty.
